Genuine freedom in a society is on a higher level than the baser desire to simply do as one pleases.  Freedom in its most virulent form is the liberty to do as one ought.  This implies that true freedom is accompanied by a standard, a morality even.  History is full of examples of great nations who suffered decay and defeat because freedom became corrupted.

So how does belief in an old earth connect to (or perhaps we should say disconnect from) freedom?  When life is only the result of random chance over vast periods of time this leaves no room for the authority that by default belongs to a Creator.  The Creator is displaced by random processes which supposedly function as divine intelligence would if only given enough time.

In the resulting philosophical climate it is not long before morality becomes relative, something left to the individual to work out for himself since there is no authority perceived to be higher.  Societies affected in this way are populated by people who do as they wish in the name of freedom.  Yet genuine freedom is diminished under such conditions.  Each succeeding generation is less able to exercise self government, a major prerequisite for genuine freedom.

Eventually laws are passed to protect against the extreme behavior some begin to practice.  The ultimate outcome is that people willingly trade away their freedom for security and protection.  External restraints must replace the internal restraints that were retired when the idea of an old earth and all that descends from that belief were accepted.
