Faith's Foundation
Biblical Authority

Faith is not just a warm fuzzy feeling and a willingness or ability to ignore facts for the sake of doctrine.  God calls believers to be able to give an account for the hope that they have as His children.  The phrase "that ye may know" appears 17 times in the King James Version, almost always in the context of conveying an important truth.  God does want us to have faith that is based on fact rather than feeling.  He wants us to know that we can trust Him.

The Bible is the definitive authority for testing whether a principle is godly.  It is also a reliable history book.  It has the power to set people free who are bound, to heal the sick and brokenhearted and to bring all men to salvation.  It is the foundation of our faith because God is alive and watches over His Word to perform it.

When a person throws out a portion of scripture in an effort to align with a particular "scientific" interpretation of data, at that moment he tosses away the authority of scripture.  If we are to pick and choose what we will accept in scripture and what we will not, we have torpedoed our ship of faith based on the plain meaning of God's Word.  There are suddenly no more absolutes, and we are left with no way to defend against further compromise.

Darwin went down this slippery slope.  He began as a creationist but ended life as an atheist, having listened to men of science who swayed him with theories of the day.  Once the process begins one step leads to another until a person is swept far from where they began.  Likewise, remember Galileo who suffered at the hands of religious professionals for stating the true nature of the relationship between the sun and the earth.  Follow God only, He will not deceive you.

The Word is the foundation of our faith.  We needn't compromise it away.  Certainly an apparent contradiction may present itself from time to time but that is how we discover the truth, by looking to God to show us what we cannot understand on our own.  Truth cannot conflict with truth.  Sometimes science has had to catch up with the Bible, patience is rewarded in those cases, not compromise.  Don't be bullied by anyone who asserts authority they don't really possess.  God has promised "that ye may know".  Take Him up on that.
