Dr. Walt
Brown has a clear vision of how he would like to engage evolutionists
in debate. Since 1980 he has had a standing offer to conduct a
written debate that could be publishable by either side. He has
even offered a $200 finders fee to university students who can find a
professor willing to debate him. For various reasons there have
been no takers.
Some claim
they have no time. Yet they should be willing to defend what
they teach, particularly if they are receiving public money to do it.
Some feel
unqualified, yet Dr. Brown is willing to debate an entire team of
evolutionists.
Some
decline to give a creationist a forum. This is very unscientific
not to be willing to freely exchange ideas and have open discussions.
Some object
to debating against creationism since it is a religious concept.
Still, there is much scientific evidence supporting it, and evolution
also has a religious aspect. Dr. Brown proposes that an umpire
be used to remove references that are not scientific from the
published debate.
And still
others would require that the debate be refereed in science
journals. But those journals are extremely biased in favor of
evolution and an old earth as evidenced by the sorts of articles they
publish. The editors would also be subject to harsh criticism
from others in the evolutionist community not to mention the risk of
losing advertisers.
Furthermore,
Dr. Brown encourages us all to become familiar with the problem, to
learn more and to share this with friends. But don't stop there,
talk to educators and administrators and encourage them to add what
Dr. Brown calls an Origins Research Project to their curriculum.
Details of this can be seen on his web site.
Challenge
evolutionists. Ask why they will not debate the scientific
evidence.
Expose
theistic evolution. Raise the issues with your church leaders
and explain that the biblical account is supported by scientific
evidence. Also point out the theological problems that go along
with this compromise. And finally ask church leaders to bring in
outside speakers and to add books to the church library that address
this issue fairly.
Encourage
the media when they do give fair coverage of this issue.
Likewise, politely reason with them when offering criticisms of
coverage that does not challenge assumptions or which ignores evidence.
Dr. Brown
would also remind us that we are engaged against an idea, not
individuals. Prayer is always in season. Consider this
from 1 Peter:3:15 "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,"
